not everything is invented
If you are someone who think that there is no need to invent things and that and everything you can imagine there is, well I invite you to read this article that Forbes magazine asked 95 CEOs to appoint a device you want someone to invent. The results range from the highly imaginative (as a youth pill) to useful things and mundane (like a simple and inexpensive desalination, which could transform the lives of millions of poor). These were favorites of the editors:
1 - Role-mail: paper is everywhere, but it lets you download news here or search the Web. A lightweight electronic paper, easy to read and flexible as regular paper, but with computer features would be the solution. It is said that companies like Xerox, E-Ink, Philips and Apple are working on it, but have been doing it for years.
2 - Domestic Robot: nobody likes to clean house. A robot could do it for you. There is already a Roomba, an automatic vacuum cleaner from iRobot. Just need to fix the bed, wash dishes and clean the bathroom.
3 - universal device: have too many electronic devices. How about one that does it all?. Fortunately, not far off: the Apple's iPhone has music, video, e-mail, phone, web browser and camera.
4 - Brain Implants: our brains tend to be very creative, but lack the power and speed of computers. If only we could implant chips in the brain ... The 10-year probabilities are small, but already have implants in rats.
5 - The bubble: Tired of dirty, noise and annoyances of everyday life? Imagine being able to travel in a protective bubble. There is nothing like hearing unless combining a Segway (personal transporter), an anti-rain coat and a noise-canceling headphones.
6 - universal translator: if you happen to be a week in Beijing and the next in Berlin, and does not handle the respective languages, could use a device for simultaneous translation, written and spoken. There are many translation programs, and every day better - but still a long way.
7 - Desalination simple and cheap one in five people in the world lack access to potable water, which can be solved either from the oceans. The technology exists, but is expensive and energy intensive.
8 - Car Autopilot: pay attention to the road is tedious and time consuming. A sophisticated autopilot could do the job, while we sleep, read or catch up on work. For the typical consumer, this is still far off, although there are projects of "highway with sensors."
9 - Physical Search: Do you lose things? Imagine having a physical form. If you put RFID chips to all your belongings, it could work. But there are many obstacles, including how much would be willing to pay to be reminded that the keys are under the sofa.
10 - A time machine: if you make a mistake, I could go back in time and correct. Unfortunately, the physicists say is impossible.
11 - Belt automatic weight loss: diet takes time and effort (diet, exercise, etc..). If only we could take the weight with a belt while watching TV. Unfortunately, the closest thing there is to "automatic" is plastic surgery.
12 - perfect vision correction: as the eyes age, the eye can see. Trifocal use is not fun, so a corrective procedure to restore the 20-20 would be nice. There is surgery that corrects near and far vision, but for the problem of aging eyes ... nothing.
13 - Pill Youth: youth and beauty disappear quickly. Imagine having a pill to keep it forever young. Currently, there are ways to "trick" cosmetically, but no more.
